- Note
- "Anecdotes of William Hogarth presents a fascinating autobiographical look at the notorious English satirical artist. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was a painter, printmaker, critic, and cartoonist. He is best known for his painted and engraved series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress, and Marriage A-la-Mode. These acerbically satirical and strongly moralizing works were mass-produced and widely disseminated as prints during his lifetime. This made Hogarth one of the most popular and significant artists of his generation. Lending further insight into the life and career of the renowned artist, this volume presents Hogarth's colorful autobiographical writings, supplemented with his own descriptions of his prints and an explanation of the narrative and meaning of his famed series Marriage A-la-Mode. An introduction by Martin Myrone, lead curator of British art to 1800 at Tate, contextualizes and expounds on these texts."--taken from front cover flap.
- ""In the ensuing pages it shall be my endeavour to vindicate myself from these aspersions ..." So declares Hogarth early on in his autobiographical work Anecdotes of William Hogarth, in which the famed satirical artist speaks with candor and passion - and a bit of cantankerous grumbling - about his professional journey and the realities of life as an artist in eighteenth-century England, where he struggled to earn a living and make a name for himself before attaining success and widespread recognition."--taken from back cover.
