- As familiar as Italy has always been to German travelers and as deeply as the Germans' love for "italianità", the country seems alien today. In fact, it seems to be getting stranger and stranger - think of its populist government, collapsing bridges or the continued existence of the mafia. Where does all this come from? Thomas Steinfeld lived in Italy and traveled the country, from South Tyrol to Apulia, from the mountain passes in the north to the olive plantations in the south. Here he shows the whole of Italy: the hustle and bustle in the centers of Rome, Venice or Florence as well as the workers' settlements in the industrial areas and the misery of the suburbs.
