- Hans Blumenberg's thinking is closely connected with his own lifetime and with the society of the old Federal Republic. Persecuted under National Socialism because of his Jewish mother, shaped by his father's Catholic milieu and a humanistic elite high school in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, he was an obsessive reader from an early age who absorbed literature, philosophy, theology, natural sciences and contemporary history in equal measure and created out of it all an outstanding life's work. With recourse to previously untapped archive sources, Rüdiger Zill reveals the biographical roots of this work in his richly illustrated book and shows that it is by no means as monolithic as it appears at first glance. Rather, one only understands it by following its paths and detours, as well as the networking with the sciences in the second half of the 20th century. For the first time, the reader is granted a comprehensive insight into the workshop of an author who, like no other, has meticulously documented the development of his work. Seeing Hans Blumenberg over his shoulder reading, designing and formulating for decades also means learning something about the fascinating craft of thinking for yourself.
