- Nonprofit director Carol L. Adams was born on May 11, 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky. She received her B.A. degree from Fisk University in 1965 and pursued graduate study in sociology at Boston University and the University of Chicago, earning her Ph.D. degree from the Union Graduate School in 1976. Adams began her career as research director of Northeastern Illinois University's Center for Inner City Studies (CICS) from 1968 to 1978. She subsequently led Loyola University's African American studies program and later served as the director of resident services for the Chicago Housing Authority as well as the director of Chicago's Museums and Public Schools program. Adams returned to CICS as executive director in 2000. In 2003, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich named Adams secretary of the Department of Human Services. Adams was president and chief executive officer of the DuSable Museum of African American History from 2009 until her retirement in 2014.
