Summary
Photographer Jim Alexander was born on August 7, 1935 in Waldwick, New Jersey. He earned his certificate in business management from Rutgers University in 1967 and his degree in commercial photography from the New York Institute of Photography in 1968. That same year, Alexander documented the response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1970, he joined the Black Environmental Study Team at Yale University. Alexander worked as the photographer for the Atlanta Neighborhood Arts Center in 1977, and, in 1982, established the Photo/Media Photography Collective studio gallery complex. He was appointed photographer in residence at Clark College in 1985. In 1988, Alexander established First World Bookstores. In 1993, his photographs were exhibited in Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington. Alexander was featured in the Atlanta Masters Series in 1995 and in 2000 and also earned a solo exhibit in the National Black Arts Festival.
