- Educator, consultant and author Howard Adams was born in 1940 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He earned his B.S. degree in biology from Norfolk State University in 1964 and his M.S. degree in biology from Virginia State University in 1968. Adams enrolled at Syracuse University, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in higher education administration in 1978. From 1970 to 1977, Adams was a faculty member at Norfolk State University, serving as director of alumni affairs and vice president for student affairs. He then served as the executive director of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science until 1995. Adams went on to found a consulting firm, H.G. Adams & Associates, Inc., and has written three books and over fifteen self-help guides. In 1996, President Bill Clinton named Adams one of the first recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Mentoring.
