- Bishop and college president John Hurst Adams was born on November 27, 1927 in Columbia, South Carolina. He earned his A.B. degree from Johnson C. Smith University as well as his S.T.B. degree and his S.T.M. degree from Boston University School of Theology. Adams began pastoring in 1950, while in seminary. He served briefly as a seminary faculty member at Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio; then, in 1956, Adams began a six-year tenure as President of Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. Adams later pastored large African Methodist Episcopal congregations in Seattle, Washington and Los Angeles, California. In 1972, he was elected the eighty-seventh bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and served as bishop of five Episcopal Districts during his thirty-two year tenure. Adams retired from active service in 2005 to serve as an adjunct professor at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Georgia.
