- Civic leader Cora Masters Barry was born on May 7, 1945 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Pasadena, California where she attended high school. Barry attended California State University and Texas Southern University, and then in 1970, she went on to graduate school at Howard University. There, Masters Barry worked with Operation Sisters United. In 1976, she began teaching at the University of the District of Columbia and also worked on Mayor Marion Barry's campaigns. They were married in 1994. When Barry was re-elected that year, she became Washington D.C.'s First Lady, serving until the end of his term in 1998. Masters Barry went on to found the nonprofit Recreation Wish List, serving as its chief executive officer. Under her leadership, the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center was built to serve the needs of community residents. Masters Barry and former Mayor Barry divorced in 2003.
