Summary
Chemical engineer Lilia Ann Abron was born March 8, 1945 in Memphis, Tennessee, where she obtained her B.S. degree in chemistry at Lemoyne College in 1966. She moved to Missouri and earned her M.S. degree in sanitary engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1968. Abron became the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Iowa in 1972 and went on to serve as assistant professor of civil engineering at Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University and Howard University. In 1978, Abron founded PEER Consultants, an environmental engineering consulting firm. Abron founded Peer Africa in 1995 with the mission of building energy-efficient homes in post-apartheid South Africa. She also served as president of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. In 2004, Abron was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
