- Summary
- Art gallery owner and painter Samuel Akainyah was born on September 5, 1953 in Ghana. He obtained his bachelor's degree in 1979 and later received his master's degree from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago as well as his master's degree in diplomacy and international law from the University of Chicago. After graduate school, Akainyah began to create highly expressive paintings using his knowledge of African history. In 1990, "Akainyah: The Art of Liberation" became a worldwide traveling art exhibition, paying tribute to Nelson Mandela and those who died in South African prisons. He has also published three books, including his autobiography in 2008. Akainyah was honored by the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois when they proclaimed February 15, 1999 Samuel Akainyah Day. That year, Akainyah was also elected the official artist of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
