Summary
Chess grandmaster Maurice Ashley was born March 6, 1966 in St. Andrew, Jamaica. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was twelve years old. In high school, Ashley joined the Black Bear School of Chess, a local club of African American chess enthusiasts in Brooklyn. Within two years of his high school graduation, Ashley became a National Master of Chess. Ashley studied English in college, but in his free time coached the Raging Rooks chess team at a local junior high, leading the team to the national championship. In 1991, Ashley also became the Harlem Educational Activities Fund's chess director. In 1997, Ashley left his work as a chess coach and became the only African American to reach the rank of International Grand Master of Chess at the age of thirty-three. In 2003, Ashley became the U.S. Chess Federation's Grandmaster of the Year. Ashley also established the Maurice Ashley Foundation.
