Summary
Professor and college basketball coach Katherine Bennett was born on October 17, 1922 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Bennett earned her B.S. degree in English and physical education from North Carolina A & T University in 1944. She received her M.A. degree in health education from New York University in 1947; and, in 1977, her Ph.D. degree in physical education from Virginia Polytechnic and State University. From 1944 until 1945, Bennett taught at Rosenwald School in South Mills, North Carolina, and worked as a health and physical education professor at Hampton Institute. From 1953 to 1992, Bennett worked as a professor at Virginia State University. She coached the first competitive women's basketball game, integrated women's athletics into the CIAA and was the first woman to chair the department. She was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of fame in 1989. Bennett passed away on December 20, 2009 at the age of eighty-seven.
