Summary
Jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers was born on September 10, 1940 in the South Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. At age twenty-two, Ayers began his recording career. He released his first album in his own name, West Coast Vibes, in 1963. His career took off at The Lighthouse club in Hermosa Beach, California. There, he met jazz flutist Herbie Mann, who produced his first three albums on Atlantic Records. Ayers formed Roy Ayers Ubiquity in 1970, with whom he recorded mass hits We Live in Brooklyn and Everybody Loves the Sunshine. Ayers also collaborated with Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. Ayers released over eighty albums in his own name, and his Uno Melodic imprint became known among hip hop musicians as a rare groove treasure trove. A new generation of artists, including Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, and Puff Daddy, have remixed, covered and sampled Ayers' work, dubbing him the godfather of neo-soul.
