- Documentary filmmaker Orlando Bagwell was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Blessed Sacrament Baltimore Elementary School in Washington, D.C. and graduated from New Hampshire's Nashua High School in 1969. At Boston University, he earned his B.S. degree in film in 1973 and graduated with his M.A. degree in broadcast journalism in 1975. Bagwell was contracted as a film producer by WGBH-TV in the mid-1970s. In 1988, he served as a staff producer for the PBS weekly program Frontline. He founded the Boston-based media company, Roja Productions Inc., in 1989. From 1991 to 1994, Bagwell was the executive vice president of Blackside, Inc. In 1999, he produced a six hour documentary entitled Africans in America: America's Journey through Slavery; and in 2004, Bagwell became the program officer for the Ford Foundation's Media Arts and Culture unit. In 2014, he was selected to direct the documentary program at the University of California, Berkeley.
