Summary
Mayor Marion Barry was born on March 6, 1936 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Barry grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, where he helped desegregate the buses in 1958. Barry subsequently abandoned his doctoral studies in chemistry at the University of Tennessee to join the Civil Rights Movement full-time. Barry was elected the first chairman of SNCC and came to Washington, D.C. in 1965 to open a local chapter. He never left and became a major player in the politics of the nation's capital, serving first on the city's first elected school board and then on the first elected city council. In 1978, Barry became Washington, D.C.'s second elected mayor. He held that office for twelve years until he was forced to step down. In 1992, he won back a council seat and then was elected mayor again in 1994. Barry passed away on November 23, 2014 at the age of seventy-eight.
