- Summary
- Photographer Bob Black was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 4, 1939. After briefly attending Woodrow Wilson Junior College, Black left school to work. His first job as a photographer was with the Chicago Defender in 1965, by then the largest African American-owned newspaper in the nation. In 1968, Black went to work at the Chicago Sun-Times. In addition to his photojournalism, Black was a founding member of the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers, created to promote the work of its members and educate future generations. Black also devoted time to personal projects, such as his photographic series on life in the Dominican Republic. In 2001, CAAAP and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art had a month-long showing of work by local African American photographers, including Black. His work won first place at the World Press Photo Competition as well as numerous other awards.
