Summary
Academic administrator, newspaper editor, and magazine editor John H. Britton, Jr. was born July 21, 1937, in Nashville, Tennessee. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Drake University and Syracuse University, respectively. He began his career as a writer for The Atlanta Daily World newspaper. Upon departing in 1962, Britton joined Jet magazine for the opportunity to cover the Civil Rights Movement. He left Jet after four years, to chronicle the Civil Rights Project. He then returned to Jet magazine as managing editor for another four-year period. Britton's contributions included stints in public affairs at Motown Records and the Washington Post. He then served a nineteen-year tenure at the University of the District of Columbia in the department of public affairs. In 1998, he returned to his native Nashville, Tennessee to serve as associate vice president for marketing and communications and assistant to the president of Meharry Medical College.
