Summary
State representative Tyrone Brooks was born October 10, 1945, in Warrenton, Georgia. At the age of fifteen, Brooks began volunteering for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and by 1967, he was a full-time employee and came in direct contact with many leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1976, Brooks was arrested outside of the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C., while protesting apartheid. Brooks was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1980, where he has since served for decades. He led the push to remove Confederate symbols from the state flag, and John Marshall School of Law awarded him an honorary J.D. degree in 2001 for this efforts. Brooks has strived to eradicate racism, sexism, illiteracy and injustice, and he has served on a number of committees and organizations to further these goals. Brooks lived with his wife, Mary, in Atlanta, Georgia.
