- Newspaper columnist Dorothy Gilliam was born November 24, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. After earning her B.A. degree in journalism from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, she worked for the Tri-State Defender. In 1957, she worked as the assistant editor at Jet magazine. After earning her M.A. degree from Columbia University in New York in 1960, she worked at The Washington Post in 1961 as the first African American female reporter. Her career spanned over thirty years. Gilliam authored the 1976 biography, Paul Robeson, All American. In 1993, Gilliam was elected as president of the National Association of Black Journalists where she served until 1995. In 1997, she created the Young Journalists Development program at The Washington Post. In 2004, as a fellow at George Washington School of Media and Public Affairs, Gilliam founded Prime Movers Media, a journalism mentorship for underserved students at urban schools.
