- Sociologist Robert Hill was born on August 7, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Boys High School in 1956 and earned his B.A. degree in sociology from City College of New York. From there, he earned his Ph.D. degree in sociology in 1969 from Columbia University. In 1969, he was hired to work at the National Urban League where he remained until 1981. In 1972, he published his first book, The Strength of Black Families. From 1981 until 1986, he worked for the Bureau of Sociology and Science Research. From 1986 until 1989 Hill worked as consultant to the White House for the Reagan Administration. From 1989 until 1998, Hill served as research director at Morgan State University. In 1999, He published The Strengths of African American Families: Twenty-Five Years Later. During that same year Hill was offered a position with Westat, a research firm in Rockville, Maryland where he remained.
