- Music professor and pianist Raymond Thompson Jackson, Jr. was born on December 11, 1933 in Providence, Rhode Island. He earned his B.S. degree in music in 1955 from the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1957, he earned his B.S. degree in piano from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He went on to receive his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from Juilliard in 1959 and 1973, respectively. Jackson studied in France at the American Conservatory of Music during the 1960s. In 1963, Jackson received a fellowship where he performed a series of debut piano recitals in Vienna, London, Stockholm, Geneva, and Munich. In 1970, Jackson began teaching music as an adjunct professor at Mannes College of Music in New York and Concordia College. He was the first African American and musician inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. Beginning in 1977, he taught at Howard University.
