- Basketball team owner and corporate executive, Mannie Jackson, was born on May 4, 1939, in Illmo, Missouri. Jackson's family moved to Edwardsville, Illinois where he graduated from Edwardsville High School before obtaining his B.S. degree in education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his M.A. in marketing and economics from the University of Detroit. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1960, Jackson played for the Harlem Globetrotters until 1964. Jackson launched his business career in 1968, becoming the director of Labor Relations for the Honeywell Corporation. In 1993, Jackson invested in the Harlem Globetrotters, eventually becoming the owner and president of the team. Jackson received numerous awards, including Black Enterprise magazine's "Most Powerful Black Executives," the Effa Manley Sports Executive of the Year Award and was recognized by the Basketball Hall of Fame with an award named after him: Mannie Jackson Basketball's Human Spirit Award in 2007.
