- Nonprofit CEO Christine James-Brown was born on September 9, 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Burlington City High School in Burlington, New Jersey, James-Brown enrolled at Rutgers University's Douglass College. She earned her B.A. degree in cultural anthropology in 1974. She was then hired as a planning consultant for the United Way before being promoted to deputy director of administration and director of allocations and agency relations for the nonprofit organization. In 1988, she served as director of fund distribution and community problem-solving. Six years later, James-Brown was appointed president and CEO for the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. She then became president and CEO for United Way International in 2004. Three years later, she left the United Way to become president and CEO of the Child Welfare League of America. James-Brown amassed numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including an honorary doctorate from Drexel University.
