- Engineer Joycelyn Harrison was born in 1964 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1987, Harrison received her B.S. degree in chemistry from Spelman College and her B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech in 1993. Harrison went to work for the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (AMPB) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Langley Research Center as a research engineer. Harrison conducted much of her research in the field of piezoelectric materials with her work culminating with the Thin-Layer Composite-Unimorph Piezoelectric Driver and Sensor ("THUNDER") project. In 1999, she became chief of Langley's Advanced Materials and Processing Branch. Ten years later, she joined the Air Force Office of Scientific Research as director of the Low Density Materials program. Harrison's personal achievements include a number of patents for piezoelectric substrates that she invented between 1999 and 2008.
