- Magazine editor Marcia Ann Gillespie was born on July 10, 1944 in Rockville Centre, New York. After graduating from high school, Gillespie enrolled in Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois where she received her B.A. degree in American Studies in 1996 and graduated with honors. Gillespie was hired as a managing editor at the newly-founded African American publication Essence magazine in 1970 and was promoted to editor-in-chief in 1971. In 1980, Gillespie worked at Ms. Magazine and was named editor-in-chief by 1992, making her the first African American woman to achieve that position at a mainstream publication. In 2008, Gillespie co-authored the authorized biography of Maya Angelou, A Glorious Celebration. She worked as professor of diversity in residence for the Johnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Gillespie received numerous awards including the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communication.
