- Politician Edna Jackson was born on September 18, 1944 in Savannah, Georgia. She graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School in Savannah in 1962. She earned her B.S. degree in sociology in 1968 and her M.E. degree in 1972 from Savannah State University. She also studied counseling at Georgia Southern University. Jackson was a member of the NAACP Youth Council in Savannah. She took an integrated group of students to the 1963 "March on Washington". After working as a social worker with the Economic Opportunity Authority, Jackson was appointed director of the Emergency School Assistant program at Savannah State College in 1971 where she served in numerous positions, including director of Alumni Affairs until her retirement in 2001. She served for three terms on the Savannah City Council and as Mayor Pro Tem of Savannah for two terms. In 2012, Jackson was elected Mayor of Savannah but lost reelection in 2016.
