- Summary
- Educator and activist Reuben K. Harpole was born on September 4, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Milwaukee's "Bronzeville" neighborhood, graduating from North Division High School in 1953. In 1957, Harpole was drafted into the Army and served in Korea. Harpole began a thirty-one year tenure at the University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin at the recommendation of former Milwaukee Mayor Frank Zeidler in 1966. Working with professors at the university, Harpole surveyed segments of Milwaukee's black population. In response to the survey's findings, he co-founded the Center for Urban Community Development at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Harpole retired from the Center in 1997 as senior outreach specialist, and joined the Helen Bader Foundation as program officer for youth development the following year. Harpole contributed to the founding of more than twenty-five community centers and programs that promote education. Harpole served on numerous civic associations and boards, including the Milwaukee Urban League.
