Summary
Educator Ruth Brett Quarles was born on November 23, 1914, in Winton, North Carolina. Graduating with honors from Shaw University in 1935, Quarles earned an M.A. degree from Hartford Seminary and an Ed.D. degree from Columbia University. Quarles began her lifelong career in education in 1936, as dean at Bennett College and Tuskegee Institute. She volunteered in Germany following World War II, where she helped displaced refugees. In 1956, she joined the staff of Morgan State University, where she remained until her retirement in 1980, serving in a number of posts, including director of counseling and academic advising. Quarles also served on the national board of directors of the YWCA and a number of other organizations. In 1982, the Ruth Brett Symposium was held in her honor at the University of Maryland. Her husband, renowned scholar Benjamin Quarles, passed away in 1996. Quarles passed away on January 16, 2007, at the age of 92.
