- Academic administrator and sociology professor Adelaide McGuinn Cromwell was born on November 27, 1919, in Washington, D.C. After earning her A.B. degree in sociology from Smith College in Massachusetts, Cromwell received her M.A. degree in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard's Radcliffe College in 1946. Cromwell became the first African American instructor at New York's Hunter College and then at her alma mater, Smith College. Cromwell became a pioneering African and African American studies scholar and activist. She completed her distinguished thirty four-year career in sociology at Boston University between 1951 and 1985. She helped to establish the school's African studies program and earned the title of professor emeritus. Cromwell is the author of several books on black history. Her dedication to the development of African and African American history, life and culture gave her national and international recognition from educators, policymakers and institutions.
