- Academic administrator and educator Elizabeth Rawlins was born on November 25, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After receiving her B.S. degree in education from Salem State Teachers College in 1950, Rawlins began a seventeen-year career as an elementary school teacher. Earning her M.S. degree in 1967, she began as a lecturer at Simmons College, and by 1979 she was the associate dean responsible for the Human Services Program. Rawlins earned her Ed.D. degree in 1991, retiring a year later. During her twenty-five years there, she addressed racially sensitive issues and became known for her passionate devotion to students, especially students of color. She served on numerous boards dealing with education policy. After her retirement in 1992, Rawlins lived on Martha's Vineyard where she was active in the community, serving as vice president of the Martha's Vineyard branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
