- Military officer Walter Sanderson, Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. on March 20, 1921. After graduating from Dunbar High School, Sanderson enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C. earning his B.S. degree in 1941. He joined the United States Army 25th Infantry Regiment, 93rd Infantry Division in 1942, fighting in the Pacific campaign of World War II. He also served with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division in the Korean War in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Army for 23 years, Sanderson worked as a defense analyst with the U.S. Government. Sanderson earned several commendations for his service in the United States Army including two Bronze Star Medals, a Purple Heart, the United Nations Service Medal and a Master Combat Infantry Badge. Sanderson was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization and the Second Infantry Division Association.
