Summary
Jazz bassist and music professor Larry Ridley was born on September 3, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ridley attended Indiana University in 1955. He completed his B.S. degree at New York University in 1971, his M.A. degree in cultural policy at State University of New York Empire State College in 1993, and his Ph.D. degree in performing arts at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore in 2005. In 1959, Ridley moved to New York City, playing with well-known jazz musicians, including: Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk. He released his own album Sum of Parts in 1975. In 1985, he formed the Jazz Legacy Ensemble. Ridley was a professor of music at Rutgers University from 1971 to 1999, developing the college's jazz education program. Ridley also served as the northeast regional coordinator for the International Association for Jazz Educators, and executive director of the African American Jazz Caucus.
