Summary
Academic administrator Patricia Mell was born on December 15, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Collinwood High School in 1971, and earned her A.B. degree, with honors, from Wellesley College in 1975. She earned her J.D. degree in 1978 from Case Western Reserve Law School. Mell worked for the Ohio Attorney General's Office and was corporation counsel for the Ohio Secretary of State. She taught law at Capital University, University of Toledo, Widener University, Wayne State University, Michigan State University and Memphis State University law schools. Mell also served as associate dean for academic affairs at Michigan State University from 1998 to 2001. In 2003, she was appointed dean of the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, the first woman and first African American dean in the school's 104-year history. She wrote about the U.S. Patriot Act and also authored a textbook entitled Criminal Law: Cases, Commentary and Questions.
