- U.S. congresswoman Yvonne Brathwaite Burke was born October 5, 1932 in Los Angeles, California. She earned her B.S. degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles; her J. D. degree from the University of Southern California Law School in 1956 She organized legal defense after the 1965 Watts riots in Los Angeles. And was appointed to the McCone Commission, which investigated the causes of the disturbance. She was a member of the California State Assembly, representing the 63rd district, from 1966-1972. She was elected to the United States Congress in 1972 and served on the House Select Committee on Assassinations and the House Committee on Appropriations. During her tenure, she fought for increased federal funding to assist in compliance with school desegregation mandates. After leaving Congress, Braithwaite-Burke served on the Board of Regents of the University of California and the L. A. County Board of Supervisors.
