Summary
College president, nonprofit chief executive and physicist George Campbell, Jr. was born on December 2, 1945, in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated with his B.S. degree in physics in 1968, from Drexel University in Philadelphia; and his Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from Syracuse University in New York. He is also a graduate of the Executive Management Program at Yale University. Campbell joined AT&T Bell Laboratories where he helped design the third generation of telecommunications satellites. He was a delegate to the International Telecommunications Union. After Bell Labs, Campbell was president and CEO of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) a nonprofit organization designed to encourage young people to pursue the study of engineering. IN 2000, Campbell became the first African-American president of Cooper Union, a private university in New York City. Upon his retirement in 2011, he was named president emeritus by the Cooper Union board of trustees.
