- Former mayor Kenneth Errol Reeves was born on February 8, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. Reeves attended Detroit's public schools, before attending Harvard University, where he graduated in 1973 with his B.A. degree in American history and literature. In 1976, he graduated from University of Michigan Law School. Reeves entered into private law practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts until he was elected to the Cambridge City Council in 1990. Reeves was elected Mayor of Cambridge in 1992, becoming the first African American and the first openly gay person elected mayor of any city in Massachusetts. While serving as mayor and councilman, Reeves served as chairman of the Cambridge School Committee, implementing a public education system with science and math in a measure to prepare Cambridge students for the future. He established the city's first Office of Tourism and formed a commission to give a voice and platform to the city's Latino and Haitian immigrants.
