- Education professor Geraldine Brownlee was born in East Chicago, Indiana. She earned her B.A. degrees in biology and Spanish from West Virginia State College in 1947; her M. S. T. and Ph.D. in urban education from the University of Chicago in 1967 and 1975, respectively. In 1955, she began her career as a teacher in Chicago public schools. From 1967- 1970, Brownlee worked in teacher training at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Education. In 1971, she was named assistant professor and assistant dean of student services in the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) College of Education. She served as director of Title VII desegregation projects for Illinois School District 163. Brownlee ended her career as the Special Assistant to the Provost at DePaul University, and director of the DePaul Teacher Corps. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Urban League and the Metropolitan YWCA.
