- Lawyer and former U.S. Congressman William Jefferson was born on March 14, 1947 in Lake Providence, Louisiana. In 1969, he received his B.A. from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he participated in ROTC. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army where he served in a reserve capacity. After graduating from Harvard Law School with his J.D. degree in 1972, Jefferson returned to Louisiana and established his own law firm, Jefferson, Bryan and Gray which became the largest African American law firm in the South. Jefferson spent time in the Judge Advocate General's Corps and clerked for a federal district court judge. He was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1980 and served there until being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1991 serving for nine terms until 2009. He was Louisiana's first African American since the end of Reconstruction, and chaired the Congressional Black Caucus.
