Summary
University president Phillip Clay was born on May 17, 1946, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He earned his A.B. degree in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968; and his Ph.D. degree from MIT in 1975. Clay began his academic career as an assistant professor at MIT. From 1994 to 2001, he held various posts, including associate provost; head of the department of urban studies and planning; and assistant director of the Joint Center for Urban Studies of MIT and Harvard University. In 2001, Clay was appointed Chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He retired as chancellor in 2011. Clay is known for his work in U. S. housing policy and community based development. He is a founding member of the National Housing Trust, an organization that focuses on housing preservation. He also serves on the board of The Kresege Foundation and the University of North Carolina.
