Summary
Furrier James McQuay was born on November 15, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. Shortly after birth, his family moved to Yonkers, New York. In 1939, McQuay worked for Nathan Ginsburg, a Yonkers furrier who taught him essentials of the fur trade. After graduating from Yonkers High School in 1943, McQuay was drafted into World War II, serving until 1946. In 1950, McQuay opened his first shop in Harlem, New York, making him one of the only African American furriers in the country. McQuay closed shop in 1956 to open another store in Mt. Vernon, New York. In 1963, McQuay returned to New York City to pursue freelance work, and by the 1970s, his furs could be seen in numerous blaxploitation films, including Cleopatra Jones and Foxy Brown. McQuay received numerous accolades for his achievements including being featured in Essence magazine. McQuay passed away on June 23, 2012 at age 87.
