- Education administrator and educator Shirley Malcom was born on September 6, 1946 in Birmingham, Alabama. She received her B.S. degree in zoology from University of Washington in 1967 and her M.S. degree from University of California at Los Angeles in 1968. She taught biology before obtaining her Ph.D. degree in ecology from Pennsylvania State University in 1974. In 1975, Malcom began her career with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as a research assistant in the Office of Opportunities in Science (OOS). In 1976, she co-authored the seminal paper, "The Double Bind: The Price of Being a Minority Woman in Science". Malcom was head of OSS in 1979 and head of AAAS Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs in 1989. In 1994, Malcom was appointed to the National Science Board by President Bill Clinton and was named to the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology.
