- Composer, jazz musician and educator Wendell Morris Logan was born on November 24, 1940. He was one of three sons born to Dorothy Mae Horton and Simuel Morris Logan. He earned his B.S. degree in music from Florida A&M University in 1962, his M.M. degree from Southern Illinois University in 1964, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Iowa in 1968. Logan taught public school in 1963 while completing the requirements for his Ph.D. In 1994, Logan was a fellow at Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy. He served as Professor of African American Music and chair of Jazz Studies at Oberlin Conservatory. Logan performed throughout the United States and in other countries. His recordings were featured on Orion and Golden Crest, among others. His awards include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim fellowship. Logan passed away on June 15, 2010 at age 69.
