- Judge Harold David Melton was born on September 25, 1966 in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Eastpointe and Marietta, Georgia. His father, Augustus A. Melton, Jr., was the first black person to manage the District of Columbia National Airport (now Reagan International Airport). Melton graduated from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama with his B.S. degree in international business and Spanish. In 1991, he received his J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, Georgia. Melton served as section leader and assistant to the Attorney General in the Office of the Governor, in the Tax Division, for the state of Alabama. From 1998 to 2003, Melton supervised administrative staff and six lawyers in the Consumer Interests section. In 2003, he was appointed executive counsel to represent Governor Sonny Perdue on legal issues. In 2005, Melton was appointed Chief Justice to the Georgia Supreme Court at age thirty-eight.
