- Summary
- Retail entrepreneur and florist Alice Mae White Bussey was born July 31, 1947, in Dekalb County, Georgia. Bussey received her B.A. degree in sociology, her M.A. degree in public administration from Los Angeles City College; and her B.A. degree in urban studies from Windsor University. She spent sixteen years in the Department of Labor, conducting investigations and developing new programs for the elderly, welfare clients and school dropouts. She returned to Georgia as the first U. S. Labor Department representative of the state. In 1985, she became the first woman elected president of the Atlanta Business League. Bussey joined her husband, James, in the floral business and soon met the industry standards to become the first African American FTD florist in Atlanta. The Busseys now operate internationally and helped to create more than twenty new businesses. She was a board member of the International Florists Association and the Georgia Council of Visitors.
