- R&B singer song writer Reverend Dr. Mable John was born on November 3, 1930 in Bastrop, Louisiana. John and her family moved to Arkansas where her brother, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, William "Little Willie" John was born. They then moved to Detroit, Michigan. In 1956, she worked as a secretary at Friendship Mutual Insurance Company where Motown founder Berry Gordy's mother was her supervisor. In 1958, John was the first female artist on Gordy's new label, "Tamla". In 1965, John changed labels and signed with Stax Records where her song, Your Good Thing (is about to end) peaked at No. 6 on the R&B charts in 1966. In 1970, John became musical director of the Raelettes and co-wrote fifty songs for Ray Charles. She served as pastor and founder of Joy in Jesus Ministries in Los Angeles, California in 1986 and earned her D.Div. degree in 1993.
