- Academic administrator and professor Leslie King-Hammond was born on August 4, 1944. King-Hammond earned her B.F.A. degree from Queens College in 1969 and her M.A. degree and Ph.D. degrees from John Hopkins University. From 1969 to 1971, King-Hammond chaired the Art Department for the Performing Arts Workshops of Queens, New York. In 1973, King-Hammond began lecturing at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). By 1976, she was promoted to dean of graduate studies where she remained until retiring to become graduate dean emerita and the founding director of the Center for Race and Culture at MICA in 2008. Between 1977 and 1981, King-Hammond served as doctoral supervisor for Howard University's Department of African Studies. She was commissioner for the Civic Design Commission in Baltimore, Maryland from 1983 to 1987. From 1990 to 1996, she served as art consultant for the Afro-American Historical & Cultural Museum.
