Summary
Corporate executive George Lewis was born on March 7, 1941 in Burgess, Virginia. After high school, Lewis enrolled in Hampton University. Making deliveries for his uncle's restaurant, he overheard businessmen talking and decided to change his major to accounting, earning his B.S. degree in 1963. Later in 1968, he earned his M.B.A. degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. Lewis' first major job was General Foods Corporation as a sales analyst for Kool-Aid's division in New York. He moved to W. R. Grace as a financial analyst in 1967. He was then hired by Phillip Morris as corporate analyst in 1968. Lewis rose through the ranks at Phillip Morris and its subsidiaries, and by 1985, became one of the highest-ranking blacks in finance. In 1997, Lewis became president and CEO of Phillip Morris Capital Company where he retired from in 2001. Lewis received many awards and was on several boards.
