- Summary
- Stage director and artistic director Kenny Leon was born on February 10, 1956 in Tallahassee, Florida. Graduating from Clark College in Atlanta with his B.A. degree, Leon attended Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles for a brief period before returning to Atlanta. He tried theater in 1979, soon becoming a member of the Academy Theater where he worked as an actor and director. In 1990, Leon was named senior artistic director at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta. By selecting a wide range of multicultural plays, Leon brought the theater to national prominence. In 2002, after leaving the Alliance, Leon founded his own theater company in Atlanta, the True Colors Theater Company, which focused on promulgating and preserving the Negro-American theatrical classics. Soon after, Leon was counted as one of the premier theatrical directors in the world, directing three Broadway plays, two August Wilson premiers and Toni Morrison's first opera.
