Summary
Dancer and manager Geraldine Rhodes-Kennedy was born in 1932 in Union, North Carolina. After high school, Rhodes-Kennedy moved to New York City to live with her sister, Florez. Rhodes-Kennedy began working in a bar frequented by former Apollo Theater and Cotton Club dancers. Hearing stories about the history and the times of the Apollo dancers, she decided to do a benefit for a senior citizens center, getting ex-chorus girls to put on a show. Dancer Bertye Lou Wood and Rhodes-Kennedy reunited with dancers Marion Coles, Cleo Hayes, Fay Ray and Elaine Ellis. Rhodes-Kennedy began managing the new group, which first performed at the Latin Casino in the Latin Quarter in 1986, and became known as the Silver Belles. These African American senior dancers appeared on Dan Rather's 48 Hours, and in 2006 were featured in a documentary, Been Rich All My Life, produced by filmmaker Heather Lyn MacDonald.
