- Mayor Michael B. Coleman was born November 18, 1954, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Coleman received his B.A. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1977; and his J.D. degree from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1980. He began his career as an attorney in the Ohio attorney general's office. In 1982, Coleman was hired as a legislative aide for Columbus City Councilman Ben Espy. In 1984, he joined the Schottenstein Law Firm. In 1992, Coleman became a member of the Columbus City Council and served as president of the city council from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, Coleman was elected mayor of Columbus, Ohio, the city's first African American mayor. Coleman eventually served four terms in that office, becoming the city's longest-serving mayor. He was instrumental in Columbus Downtown business development and created the after-school program, Capital Kids. He also spearheaded anti-crime initiatives. CO returned to private practice in 2015.
